As a lover of Facebook but a supporter of privacy, developer Brian Kennish has devised a Facebook application claiming to block information to and from third-party advertisers.

Kennish, a developer at Google, decided to develop a program to counter Facebook Connect’s ability to follow users as they browse registered sites on the web. It also suppresses the “Connect via Facebook” sidebar.

As a member of the Chrome team, his application is an extension for the Google browser. He therefore felt it necessary to make it clear on his download site that he developed the utility as a private individual and that it had nothing to do with any Google initiative.

Microsoft Research launched beta version of Wikipedia where users can now use in other languages. The WikiBhasha tool enables contributors to Wikipedia to find content from other Wikipedia articles, translate the content into other languages, and then either compose new articles or enhance existing articles in multilingual Wikipedias. WikiBhasha will support content creation in more than 30 languages. The beta version of WikiBhasha will enable easy content creation in non-English Wikipedias by leveraging the large volume of English Wikipedia content as the source of information. Initially, the Wikimedia Foundation and Microsoft Research will also work closely with the Wikipedia user communities focusing on content creation in Arabic, German, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.

In response to the reports saying sharing of face book UIDs with ad networks and data brokers, Facebook have been investigating a technical solution to this issue. They have planned to start encrypting the parameters that they pass to iframe-based applications which will prevent the accidental disclosure of this UIDs information via HTTP headers.

When we load any image or other resources on any webpage, it sometimes send an HTTP header that identifies the URL of the webpage. But for iframe-based canvas applications on Facebook the URL of the iframe may contain UID of the user. To overcome inadvertently sharing this information via the HTTP Referrer header, Facebook would be offering encryption services for user IDs in the near future.
